EU to hit UK with a multi-billion pound tax body blow

UKIP West Midlands MEP Mike Nattrass says British consumers face being hit by a multi-billion pound tax body blow as the EU plans to introduce a minimum rate of tax on carbon.

Brussels’ bureaucrats are drawing up plans to introduce the European Union’s first direct tax with a ‘green’ levy on natural gas, petrol and coal.

But, reacting to the move this week, Mr Nattrass, who is UKIP’s Transport spokesman and is also a member of the EU’s Transport & Tourism Committee, says this direct tax and levy would be devastating news for the fragile British economy.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday reported that the EU could announce the plans as early as next month despite shelving similar proposals in 2005.

Mr Nattrass says the controversial EU move would lead to massive hikes in petrol and food prices as well soaring energy bills.

“At a time when the British economy has just struggled out of a painful period of deep recession here we have the EU trying to bring in something that quite simply would be disastrous,” he said.

“Petrol prices would increase significantly as would energy bills. Consumers would also be hit hard as the cost to distribute goods would rise.

“Hauliers and motorists are already struggling to pay escalating fuel prices at the pumps. Pensioners are also struggling to pay their energy bills to stay warm.

“As always we have yet more European Union plans which would cost us all dearly.

“What a disgrace. It is time Britain pulled out of the European Union and UKIP is the only party committed to this aim. We should manage our own affairs and not be dictated to by the EU."
