'Bring back coal'

UKIP West Midlands MEP Mike Nattrass has today fuelled calls to ‘BRING BACK COAL’ following his attendance at a high-profile debate in Stoke which focused on the events of the miners’ strike.

The MEP joined a panel including Edwina Currie, George Galloway and film-maker Ken Loach on Wednesday, to debate the 1984-5 miner’s strike and its impact on Britain, its people and its economy as a whole.

Before the event, which was held at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Mr Nattrass said he hoped to encourage a bigger debate over the future of coal and energy in this country.

“The debate on Wednesday was a tremendous success and was very well attended,” said Mr Nattrass.

“I hope this event encourages further debate as we really need to take a serious look at how we generate energy in this country.

“We have 200 years supply of coal in the UK and with the new “clean burn” technology it should be fed into new state of the art power stations built alongside. This would help to diversify our reliance on other fuels and would bring back jobs to North Staffordshire.

“Wind turbines are not just eyesores they are also totally inefficient. Last year, members of the Stop Turbines Action Group (STAG) visited me at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and I heard of their plight and campaign against the erection of six 420ft high wind turbines in the Staffordshire village of Marston.

“In November, I urged people in South Staffordshire to support their fight and I also urged Stafford Borough Council to reject plans to build a 200 foot wind turbine in Aston By Stone.

“I am all for so called “green and efficient energy” and believe our environment should be protected for future generations but we are sitting on a massive alternative to subsidised windmills which is clean and employs local people, I want to bring back coal,” he added,
