Gold-en boost for Staffordshire Hoard campaign

UKIP West Midlands MEP Mike Nattrass has this week welcomed news that a campaign to keep the UK’s largest haul of Anglo-Saxon gold treasure in the region has achieved a major milestone.

The concerted campaign to keep the Staffordshire Hoard in the West Midlands has raised £800,000 in just three weeks and now hopes are high that the £3.3million target will be collected in time for the April deadline.

In January, Mr Nattrass, who is a member of the EU’s Transport & Tourism Committee, urged people to support the fundraising to keep the impressive collection in the West Midlands where it was unearthed by Terry Herbert.

The Staffordshire Hoard, which was discovered on farmland in southern Staffordshire, is a collection of more than 1,500 items which are currently on display at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent.

Mr Nattrass believes keeping the collection in the region could boost local tourism and bring more visitors to the area.

He said: “I find it greatly encouraging that such a large amount of money has been raised in just three weeks to keep the collection where it belongs.

“The Staffordshire Hoard is an exciting find and I am pleased that people are getting behind the campaign to keep it in the West Midlands.

“We should be proud of this historic discovery and future generations should be able to view it here in the region.

“I now urge people to continue the fight and raise the £3.3 million needed by the April 17 deadline,” he added.
