British TV will be 'dumbed down' thanks to the EU

UKIP MEP Mike Nattrass says British television will be dumbed down thanks to the British Government and the European Union.

The West Midlands MEP believes allowing product placement on our screens will lead to a surge of advertising and plugs for products on some of Britain’s most famous programmes.

In 2007, a European Directive came into force permitting product placement for commercial purposes in certain programming if national governments allowed it.

Last September, Mr Nattrass warned that implementing the directive could spell disaster for the British TV industry which has a proud reputation of producing some of the best programming in the world.

Now, despite this warning, the British Government has announced that product placement will be allowed on our screens for the first time under legislation announced this week.

This could lead to viewers being bombarded by advertising which could dumb down our programmes and harm the quality of British television industry itself.

Mr Nattrass said: “Product placement will damage the reputation of our television industry. Long-running and popular programmes could be used as vehicle to advertise certain products.

“This is all thanks to EU interference. We are sinking under EU directives – where will it all end?

“I understand independent broadcasters need to raise revenue but I fear quality programming will make way for money-making content putting advertisers before delivering quality drama, comedy and entertainment,” he added.
