UKIP MEP Mike Nattrass has pledged to fight calls for a European national anthem. |
The West Midlands MEP has this week said Britain should stand up against any moves that erode nations’ national identities.
Mr Nattrass’ statements follow a report in yesterday’s (Monday’s) Daily Telegraph newspaper which says the ‘new front-runner’ for the role of the first President of the EU is keen to see a European national anthem and the replacement of a range of nationalistic symbols.
The report claims Herman Van Rompuy wants to see the presence of more EU flags in our schools, town halls and at sporting events.
Mr Nattrass said: “We should be proud to be British and the introduction of a European national anthem would be yet another example of the EU trying to take away countries sovereignty. |

“This proposal comes on top of plans for ‘pan European’ political parties (the same parties in each of the 27 states) for which the EU will pay extra political funding and as the EU already makes 75 per cent of our law, it is clear the EU will become a European super state.
“We should be making our own laws in Westminster and UKIP is the only party committed to withdrawing Britain from the EU.
“Not only does the EU want to dictate our law it appears is now wants to push schools and town halls into display the European Union flag. We must get out of the EU before the UK loses its identity,” he added. |
